The Advantages & Disadvantages of Flat Pack Furniture

You might be surprised to learn that flat pack furniture has numerous advantages over traditional, solid-piece furniture. Before we get into the advantages and disadvantages, let’s do a quick review of flat pack furniture.

What Types of Furniture Are Flat Pack Furniture?

Any type of “ready-to-assemble” furniture piece is considered flat pack furniture. They are commonly sold in one or more flat boxes. The buyer will have to assemble the furniture themselves or hire a professional furniture assembler, like us, to put their new furniture together.

Some types of flat pack furniture, like from IKEA, include all the tools to assemble it. However, these “tools” are not always as user-friendly for DIY assembly.

Benefit #1: Easy to transport and move into the home.

There are no large cumbersome pieces to try to get through doorways. You also do not need to remove doors to get flat pack furniture into the home. Not to mention, the boxes will stack up neatly and out of the way until you or your furniture assembler can put the furniture together.

Benefit #2: Flat pack furniture tends to cost less.

If you are on a budget, you will find that you can get more furniture pieces by purchasing flat pack furniture compared to solid, pre-assembled furniture pieces.

Benefit #3: Flat pack furniture is made from durable materials.

Today’s flat pack furniture is made from materials that are designed to last a long time. In most cases, as long as you care for the furniture, it could last 10, 15, 20 years or longer, depending on the furniture piece.

Benefit #4: Once it is put together, you rarely have to take it apart if you move.

If you ever move, your flat pack furniture can be moved as a single piece. There is no need, in most cases, to take it apart. Yet, if you have limited space on the moving truck, or it is a larger piece, you can have your furniture assembler take it apart for you to avoid damaging it, and reassemble it after you move into your new home.

Benefit #5: Flat pack furniture can be hacked.

There are several different design hacks if you want to mix and match compatible flat pack pieces to create custom furniture pieces. If you need help with a hack you want to create, your professional furniture assembler can help.

Drawback #1: Designs can be limited.

The range of designs is not always as extensive as it is with solid, pre-assembled furniture. However, if you spend time research design hacks, you could find new designs using a few different types of flat pack pieces to make your furniture more unique and original.

Drawback #2: Flat pack furniture can be a nightmare to assemble by yourself.

The instructions that come with flat pack furniture can be difficult to read or figure out, especially if they just use pictures. Fortunately, you never have to worry about this by hiring a professional furniture assembler.

Even though there are a few disadvantages of flat pack furniture, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
