Moving 101: Essential Tips for a Successful Move Part I of II

Whether you are moving out of your parent’s home, relocating to a new apartment, or moving into your first condo or house, you could already be feeling the stresses of what seems like an endless to-do list of things you need to do before your moving day.

If simply thinking about the upcoming move is giving you a headache, you would not be alone. Many people go through the same thing as you are. Moving can take up a lot of time, effort, and preparation to ensure you are ready, come moving day.

Fortunately, moving does not have to be stressful if you get organized, understand what needs to be done, plan, and use these great tips for a successful and almost stress-free move.

Tip #1: Hire professional movers right away.

Don’t wait until a few weeks before you move to try to hire professional movers. Most reputable moving companies in Toronto book up quickly at different times of the year. If you want reliable movers, book your move as soon as possible. Even if you don’t have a set moving date, you can still hire the movers now and just let them know an anticipated date.

Tip #2: Don’t wait to start packing.

One mistake a lot of people make is putting off packing until right before the actual move. This never works as you end up just tossing whatever into boxes and everything is disorganized. Instead, start packing as soon as you obtain moving supplies from your moving company.

Work on packing up anything you won’t need until you are settled into your new home. Next, go through your clothing, dishes, and other such things, and pack away as much as you can. For instance, you could pack any seasonal clothing and extra dishes you can do without.

You can also pack up anything you have stored in closets that you don’t use that often, like holiday decorations, photo albums, pictures, etc. The more you pack up now, the less you will have to pack right before the move.

Tip #3: Label your boxes.

This cannot be stressed enough. If you don’t want to spend countless hours looking for essential items after your move, take the time to label every single box. Assign a box number, the room where the box should be unloaded, and a summary of the contents on the outside of each box.

You can create an inventory spreadsheet on your computer if you need more detailed information about box contents. Fill out the spreadsheet by entering the box number, followed by the detailed contents. You can reference your spreadsheet when you need to know which box has the items you want to unpack right away.
