Moving 101: Essential Tips for a Successful Move Part II of II

If you missed Part I, we encourage you to check it too! We covered essential moving tips like hiring professional movers, when to start packing, and why you should label your boxes. In this segment, we continue our essential moving tips for a successful move.

Tip #4: Avoid DIY moving.

When it comes to DIY, it is okay to pack up as much as you can on your own. Yet, when it comes to the actual move, it is better to rely on help from professional movers. They are used to lifting, hauling, and carrying boxes, furniture, and other items. Plus, they know the most efficient way to load and unload the moving truck.

Not to mention, you will never have to worry about family or friends cancelling on you come moving day. You would be surprised by how many moving companies in Toronto get last-minute bookings because people need help loading and unloading a moving truck they rented since everyone bailed on them at the last minute.

Most importantly, your muscles will not be sore and tired after a day of moving. You also can avoid potentially injuring yourself or risking injury to others.

Tip #5: Pack household cleaning items last.

Don’t pack up cleaning supplies, the vacuum, broom, mop, mop bucket, etc. You will need these to clean your current home after everything is moved out of it, as well as your new home before you start unpacking.

Tip #6: Pack one or two boxes with essentials you will need right away.

Take the time to pack one box with bathroom linens, bathroom toiletries, a few dishes, coffee or tea, and other such things you will want access to and don’t want to waste time looking for after moving into your new home. Don’t forget to also keep first aid supplies and medicines handy and pack these into one of your essential boxes on moving day.

Tip #7: Have a “Plan B.”

Be prepared for the unexpected by having at least one alternative moving plan in place. For example, your closing date on your home may get pushed out and you need to reschedule your move. You might wake up and discover there was a blizzard overnight and roads are closed. Professional movers understand that some things are simply out of your control and will work with you to reschedule your move should something happen.

Tip #8: Don’t forget to eat balanced meals.

With so much to do and prepare for your move, it can be easy to forget about eating well-balanced meals. It is easy to rely on fast food and junk food for meals and snacks right before and after your move. However, these are nutritious and won’t give you the energy you need for moving.

You can plan ahead by making up healthy meals and portioning them into smaller freezer-safe containers. Then you just take one out and heat it up in the microwave for a quick, nutritious meal!
